Christchurch-based athletics club offering cross-country and track and field.

About Us

Learn about the origins and character of Christchurch Avon

Christchurch Avon operates year round. While there is a competitive side to the club, runners of all abilities are welcomed and catered for with social memberships. During the winter season the club participates in road racing, relays and cross-country. In summer, it focusses on track competition and more road racing.

As a registered member of the club athletes will be able to take part in a full programme of events both locally and nationally. Events are provided by the club itself, through Athletics Canterbury or Athletics New Zealand. Other local clubs host many of these events. Our members also enter numerous events open to the general public. These include road races, triathlons, marathons, off–road and mountain running. Many of our runners travel to overseas marathons. Registration fees cover all costs for Athletics Canterbury events. Often registered athletes receive a discounted entry fee to other events.

Christchurch Avon members are a social bunch, enjoying club runs, dinners, and other activities. We aim to have one or two club trips away each year to events.

Our Junior club (both summer and winter) is highly successful and over the years has had numerous individual and team successes. The summer group consistently ranks top of the South Island.

Our members come from all over Christchurch. We welcome runners of all ability. We have some members who have been with us many years; others who run with us as long as their circumstances allow; and others who simply have personal goals for a season or two and need to be in a registered club.

We have our own Clubrooms in the grounds of Burnside High School, as shown by the star on the map below.
